The Search window is opened by pressing F3, clicking on the "Search" icon, or by selecting "Free Search" from the Search Menu.

Simple Search

Type a word or several words that you want to search for and press ENTER or click on the "Search" button.

The Search window contains several lines for typing text. Each line may contain up to ten words. The additional lines enable selection of different search parameters for each group of words.

The "/" Sign (Slash)

For a search of several words in the same paragraph, list words in one search line separated by /, to signify AND/OR. For instance, typing in Hebrew: ארץ ישראל/כנען/פלשתים, will generate search results that include every case where ארץ ישראל, ארץ כנען and ארץ פלשתים, each on its own or two or three of them together.

The "!" Sign

The ! sign can be used to exclude a word from the search words. For instance, placing this sign before the word אברהם in the phrase: "וישא !אברהם את עיניו" will find every time this phrase occurs with any other name besides אברהם or without any name.

Define Search Method

Double-clicking on the small arrow on each search line opens a drop-down menu. Select the desired search method to receive more precise results.

Precise the search results must appear in the text exactly as they were written in the Search window.

Prefix/Suffix – the program will also search for words that have prefixes and suffixes attached.

Contain – the program will search for words that contain the search word, but may have additional letters before and after the search words.

Add letters -- the program will also search for words which have other letters in them but closely approximate the search word; i.e. a search for "אבינו" will also yield "לאבינו", "מאבינו", "אבותינו", "מאבותינו", and "אביאנו".

When "Add letters" is chosen, the program will search for close approximates for all words in the search line. To search for words which approximate only ONE of the search words, place it on a separate search line and set the desired parameters.

"Soundex" – the program will search for similarly sounding words that are spelled differently (i.e. will search for words that have a ט in place of a ת, and an א or ח in place of an ע). It will also search for words that have certain prefixes and suffixes attached. For instance, a search for "טעם" will also yield the words "תהום", "תאומים", "טעמו", "בתיהם", "ותהֹם".

To define more precisely what variations to look for in search words, use the following wildcards:

*           Adds one or more letters in the specified spot, i.e. searching for אבר* will find "אברם", "אברהם", "אברכך", "אברך", "אברתו" and "אבר".

?          Adds one letter in place of "?", i.e. Searching for אבר?ם will find both "אברם" and "אברהם".

@        Search for a word with a similar sound. This wildcard has the same effect as clicking on the Soundex button.

=          Search should include words with prefixes or suffixes. This wild card has the same effect as clicking on the Prefix/Suffix button.

+          Search for words which closely approximate every one of the words in the search line.

Stop

If search takes too long, it may be stopped using this button.

Clear

Erases typed text in the search box and clears selected search methods and conditions.

Last

Every search carried out during the current day is temporarily stored. Clicking on this button presents a list of today's previous searches. Selecting one of them will make it appear in the search window.

Search conditions

The user may define whether the words written on the search line should be found within a limited distance from each other or not. If you click "No distance limit", the two words may appear several lines apart, however, all results will be in the same paragraph. If you wish the two words to appear within a specified distance of each other, select Distance until and fill in a number. For instance, if you want the program to find all cases where the words "ארבעים שנה" appear consecutively, click Distance until and fill in the number 1.

Keep word order - searches for words according to the order they appear in the search list. If you do not select this, the system will search for the words in any order, despite maintaining the distance between them as defined by the user.

Databases - displays the list of databases on the CD-Rom disk, and allows you to select which databases to search.

Categorized – in versions that include several databases, the list of databases appears on the right. Select the databases you wish to search in.

Alphabetic (in versions including such a tab by the database tab) – enables choosing a specific book for search, by typing the book's name into one of the lines; the cursor will jump to the required book name for individual selection.

User may limit the search to a section of the current database. All the sections in the present database are listed in this dialog box. To limit the search to one section, mark the section – or book in the section. To search the entire database, click "Clear" and "Select All."

Select all – selects all databases for search.

Clear – clears all selections.

Close tree – closes detailed lists of books within categories (in versions containing books grouped by categories).

Close – closes the window (similar to clicking the  ×  at the top of the screen).

Words

When selecting "Prefix/Suffix" or "Soundex" as the search method, or when using wildcards like * and ?, the search engine can generate a list of words which have the same root as the word you is searching for (concordance). You may then select some or all of these words as the search words. For instance, if "נ*מר" appears in the search box, clicking on the Words button will bring up a list that includes "נאמר", "נשמר" and "נמר". The list refers to the first word in the active search line. To generate a list for several words, type each on a separate line. The list is compiled from the first database in the selection list.

History

Opens list of searches from previous sessions. Selecting a line and clicking "OK" or double-clicking on the line selects a search and transfers it to the Search window. The previous searches are sorted by date.

A status line appears at the bottom of the search window. In some versions, advertising will appear when performing a search. View advertisement by double-clicking with the mouse on the status line.
